A child’s love of reading is a beautiful thing unlike any other. A book can act like a best friend, and it opens up an entire world of imagination! In this post, I compiled some of the best children’s books we have been loving lately. Some are board books, and others are picture books. Lastly, some have more words and are great for young readers.

best in childrens books

From Dr. Seuss and his magical adventures to the classic goodnight moon board book that still ranks in popularity since 1947 I could have added hundreds more to this list! Today I will be giving you 30 new book ideas to dive into with your toddlers and young readers.

Another one of my favorite ways to read children’s books with my kids is with personalized books. Have you ever gotten one as a gift? We have and it makes the most special gift and keepsake. I feel like it is the gift that keeps on giving each time we read them.

I love the company Wonderbly because of the versatile books they offer. You can get a “Where Is Waldo” style book but personalize it to your child’s character and name. We love that one! They offer a lot of clever styles on their site. Check them out!

BEST IN CHILDREN’S BOOKS LIST

The World Needs Who You Were Made To Be

This is a great book from Joanna Gaines and an inspirational book for young kids who are learning to work together yet be uniquely themselves.

Pond

Written by Jim LaMarche it is a tale about exploration and renewal. The main character Matt gets his friends together and they transform a once forgotten pond into a small piece of heaven.

We’re Going On A Picnic!

A tale of friends who set out on a picnic to discover more wanted to join them in the journey.

Picnic

Big Red Barn

A very rhythmic book about the hard work of farm life. Giving children a true book of tools to learn with. The barnyard family eats, plays, and sleeps together as a working unit.

Tiny Seed

From the author of the famous children’s book A very hungry caterpillar (bestseller list book about a caterpillar on a quest to become a beautiful butterfly), Eric Carle does it again with Tiny Seed. A great look at life and overcoming obstacles and the life cycle of flowering plants.

Miss Rumphius

This book is an instant classic in my personal opinion. I love how the story revolves around doing good in the world and leaving the world a better place when you leave it. It’s a great book that also promotes generosity and philanthropy in unexpected places.

A Camping Spree With Mr. Magee

With colorful illustrations and exciting adventure, this is a beloved book in our collection. Mr. Magee and his little dog Dee find themselves in an unforgettable circumstance and cleverly get home safely with a happy ending. This is a great book for older readers too.

Strega Nona: Takes A Vacation

A true classic about the famous Strega Nona who entrusts her home to a young lad with a greedy nature. He is taught an important lesson and learns a lot about trust.

The Snail and the Whale

A beautiful story about friendship and adventure between a large whale and his unlikely partner a snail. This author has also written The Gruffalo (which I write about in this post here) and many other great books for kids longing for a creative book to read.

Bringing The Outside In

One of the best children’s books to inspire getting out and playing outside! It doesn’t matter if it is a snowy day or a day of good condition.

Baby Beluga

The first book my kids ever loved was Baby Beluga by the singer/songwriter Raffi. We love to sing along and go on the beluga adventure together day after day!

The Relatives Came

There is nothing more exciting than cousins coming to visit from out of town. This funny tale talks all about when the relatives came to visit!

A Tree Is Nice

Another book promoting outdoor play and frolic. The book highlights the beauty of trees as well as how fun they can be to climb and play!

The Boy and the Sea

A meditative book that encourages curiosity, trust and exploration among trying to find your own way.

boy and sea

A Turkey for Thanksgiving

A whimsical story great for the fall about Mr. and Mrs. Moose on a hunt to get their Thanksgiving turkey. Mr. Turkey however does not like this idea!

Because of an acorn

Learn about how trees grow, flowers bloom, and birds build nests. The quiet life of the ever magical ecosystem is fascinating to dive into with young kids.

Sleep Tight Farm

A book about hard work when a family gets their farm ready for winter. They tie in the seasons of growing with the end of year preparations to put the farm to rest until the spring comes.

Bear Has A Story To Tell

Bear has a story to tell his friends, but who will listen? His friends are all busy preparing for migration and winter rest. This story is a great example of friendship, patience, and being kind.

A Piglet Named Mercy

One of my favorite authors by a landslide. This great book has been climbing the charts in recent years. I love that new changes and challenges are met with hot buttered toast!

Johnny Appleseed

Always an instant classic no matter when you read it. Johnny Appleseed is a wonderful book telling the tale of planting iconic apple trees in Pennsylvania.

Randy Riley’s Really Big Hit

Chris Van Dusen does it again. One of my boys’ favorite books to read was this simply because of how creative the ending is! A must read.

The Little Engine That Could

A great book for 2 and 3 year olds. It teaches them all about being kind and never giving up! They can take these skills with them even as young adults. Always a favorite read of ours.

If You Give A Mouse A Cookie Series

I wanted to add all 9 books to this list, but added them into a series. These are adorable books about staying focused and getting sidetracked all at the same time! We love each and every book and they make great baby shower gifts!

That is my list of the best children books we are loving and have loved in recent years. Have one you love that wasn’t mentioned? I am sure you do! Comment below I would love to read it to my kids.
