In this week’s episode We are talking about all things Kid’s Capsule Wardrobes!
I finally feel inspired and ready to tackle my kids capsule wardrobes & today I am actually going to take you along with me as I declutter my two older boys closet and really curate a capsule wardrobe with the clothing they already have as we gear up for spring and summer. I am hoping this takes no longer than 20 minutes because I have a lot going on today…
There are two ways you can start a capsule: you can completely start over and buy from one or two stores consignment or new. Or you can try and work with what you have and curate right from the closet.
Because I get a lot of hand me downs from my sister and feel I have plenty of good clothes to work with I am going to work within my closet. I don’t really do seasonal capsules. I keep all types of clothing in the closet- heavy winter coats, snow suits, hats, and snowboots just get placed in the winter bin because I know we don’t use them at all in the spring or summer here in Idaho.
Capsule wardrobes work great for kids for a few reasons:
- They grow fast and need to change clothing at least once per year
- They are attracted to the same outfits over and over again
- Having too many clothing options overwhelms children
We like to choose smart and basic clothing. I tend to stay away from character clothing, words on shirts, and am drawn to more versatile pieces that can be interchanged with different items in the closet easily.
5 TIPS FOR CREATING A CAPSULE WARDROBE
- Choose 1 or 2 stores at the max to get the items from. We like going second hand because it is more sustainable. We also have clothing from my sister that gets passed down. If I need to buy new I will go to either H +M or Target on occasion. They are not sustainable places to get clothing but offer nice neutral clothing when I am in need of new.
- Choose comfortable clothing that promotes independence and is conducive to active play. Pants with a stretchy waistband for my two+ three year olds makes it certain they can easily pull their pants up and down when needing to use the bathroom. I also love when I find comfy clothing that leaves the itchy tags off!
- Find affordable pieces- don’t break the bank curating a capsule wardrobe!
- Choose a color palette if you can: I like to choose basic bottoms: blacks, grays, and jeans. For tops my boys like blues, reds, grays, and navy. We stay away from whites and lighter colors for obvious reasons!
- Get your bags ready: donate + consign and rehome to family members (my mom etc) I chose 1 of my favorite baby outfits for my boys boxes: 1 sentimental baby outfit for each.
What I am aiming for with the boys shared capsule wardrobe:
- 10-12 shirts
- 4 pairs of jeans
- 5 pairs of sweats
- 4-6 pairs of shorts
- 2-3 swimsuits
- 5-7 pajamas
- 12-15 pairs of socks
- 2 sneakers each, 1 rainboot each, 1 sandal each, 1slip on/water shoes each
- dress shoes (we don’t own any) super cheap at kids consignment
- 10 pairs underwear
- 2 light jackets or sweatshirt each
- 1 Puffy coat each
What I Ended Up With
- 15 T-shirts (7 for younger and 8 for older)
- 6 long sleeve (3 for each child)
- 4 pairs of Jeans
- 9 pairs of sweats + athletic pants
- 10 pairs of shorts (5 each child)
- 1 swim suit each child, 1 sun hat each child, 2 swim shirts, and 3 swim diapers for my youngest.
- 2 Dress shirts
- 6 pairs of pajamas total (3 each child) I need more at least 1 set more per child.
- 10 boxers
- 2 pairs of sneakers each child, 1 pair of sandals, 1 pair of rain boots, and 1 pair of water shoes per child.
- 20 pairs of socks total for three kids
- 1 puffy Winter coat per child
- 1 light jacket each, 2 half fleece zip ups each, and 1 athletic zip up coat
I hope this episode has inspired you to get into your kids closets to start decluttering, and evaluating what options they have to choose from!
It is really nice to get a capsule wardrobe going too because there is less laundry to fold. That was a motivator to me to really be ruthless regarding what clothing was available to choose from! In episode 12 I spoke with Simple Home Podcast host Jenna Arvidson about simplifying laundry systems so check that episode out if you haven’t already.
