Today I wanted to cover my simple kitchen essentials. I am striving to convert my kitchen into a traditional foods kitchen and I make a lot of food from scratch so these essentials truly do make all the difference for me. I wanted to cover my top 10 essential kitchen items that I can’t cook without. I also did a video on this and I give a few more bonus items so check that out- I will leave a link in the show notes for that.
If you are wondering what a “traditional foods kitchen is” it is simply eating food from real sources. Swapping processed options and making your own food from scratch. For me personally, this has really helped simplify our cooking.
Having a sourdough starter opens up an endless amount of options for baking. You can make anything from the starter: cake, brownies, english muffins, biscuits, pot pies, pancakes, pizza crust, bread, cobblers, bagels, cookies, pie crusts… the list goes on.
Making your own broth from a chicken carcass, or even cooking with fresh seasonal veggies or even fermenting veggies is a great place to start when you are trying to cook more from scratch.
While I do not do everything a traditional foods kitchen does ( like ferment vegetables and ferment my own dairy) I do have a sourdough starter, make bone broth, cook seasonally, and use healthy fat sources for cooking. If you are curious about converting to some what of a traditional foods kitchen go check out Mary’s Nest. She is wonderful and is a wealth of knowledge in the kitchen.
Check out my blog post on this topic! I give you the entire scoop on things I purged out of my kitchen and everything else regarding this fun topic!
I am leaving out the obvious: plates, bowls, utensils, measuring cups, spoons, can openers, and rolling pins.
When thinking about stocking those items in my kitchen I always only have 1 set or 1 of each kitchen item. I do not like to duplicate those items because they just add to the kitchen mess. I have a family of 5.
I use the replay kids plates for my kids and I always have an extra set of 4 for other children coming over. For us we have 6-8 plates and bowls and pasta bowls for when we have company. I like to have 6 extra sets over when we host our friends and family. For cups I just buy glass mason jars and have at least 10-15 on hand. I like to use a lot of sizes… more on that later.
