If you are needing the best and easy guacamole recipe that will knock the socks off of your whole family you are in the right place! This classic Mexican guacamole has a creamy texture and is made with fresh ingredients. This is by far one of my favorite recipes to make!
The best guacamole has a base and a few other special yet simple ingredients. One of my favorite restaurants in my town is known for the guacamole dip and they make it the best way, right at your table! I love this because I can watch to see what they put in it. Of course, this is a copycat to their recipe and I am excited to share it with you.
GUACAMOLE VS AVOCADO
When I come across raw avocado dip it truly just isn’t even in the same league as real guacamole. So what is the difference?
Avocado dip is just as it sounds, with ripe avocados and salt being the main ingredient. No Pico de Gallo, hardly any fresh lime and cilantro. It is very bland in my opinion. I would probably only truly enjoy that style on avocado toast. The richness of the avocado is a great start, but it needs more to call it true basic guacamole.
TRADITIONAL INGREDIENTS FOR THIS HOMEMADE GUACAMOLE
- Pico De Gallo (Tomatoes, red onion, jalapeno pepper, citrus juice, cilantro)
- Hass Avocados
- Green Tabasco or hot sauce if you like the heat
- Thyme
- Olive oil
- Lime Juice
- A small amount of salt
- Crunchy tortilla chips
TOOLS YOU MAY NEED TO MAKE THIS EASY GUACAMOLE RECIPE
- Potato masher or large fork for mashing
- Plastic wrap or bees wrap for storing in an airtight container
- Chef’s Knife + Cutting Board
- Glass bowl
- Spoon for mixing
HOW TO CHOOSE GREAT AVOCADOS
To choose a food product that will serve your dish well such as avocados, start by feeling the avocado flesh or the outer skin. With your fingers, gently press down to make a small indentation. If it is too hard, it will not make a small dent. Usually, the avocados that are the hardest have the brightest green color. The good news is you have complete control over picking the perfect avocados.
If the avocado is too soft, the flesh will mush in. These healthy fruits will go from a green color to a dark black color and the inside of the avocado will have brown spots. This is called enzymatic browning which is just another fancy word for the mushy avocados going bad.
WHAT RECIPES CALL FOR GUACAMOLE?
I love making easy recipes like this one because they go well with so many different dishes. A Mexican dish like enchiladas or any Mexican cuisine. Or you could make it for a great super bowl side (a true classic).
Some of my favorite meals to make with guacamole
- White bean chicken chili
- Quinoa Beef Nachos
- Chicken enchiladas
- Tacos
- Burritos
- Snack or Charcuterie board (use a pretzel or nut thin to dip into.
I like the creamy flavor and the good fat that is present. It will fill you up very fast, so be careful!
HEALTH BENEFITS OF GUACAMOLE
They are packed full of monounsaturated fats (the healthy fats) and dietary fiber which is great for digestion and heart health (goodbye heart disease). There are no artificial preservatives in homemade guacamole so the shelf life is a bit shorter, but it is better for you. They are also high in potassium and vitamin k as well as vitamin b.
HOW TO STORE GUACAMOLE
At first, you will get that beautiful guacamole green color when you mash it all up and add in your ingredients, but how do you keep it from going brown? Avocados will brown up very fast once they are sliced and seeded.
I like to squeeze a layer of lime juice over the guacamole before putting it in an airtight container. A thin brown layer may form over it but just stir it together again once you are ready to eat it. This particular guacamole lasts about 3 days in the refrigerator if it doesn’t get eaten before that!
HOW TO MAKE AUTHENTIC GUACAMOLE
- First thing is to get out your primary ingredient: the avocados! Once you have them out, cut them in half and take out the single seed. Once the seed is removed, you can scoop the avocado half by half into your bowl.
2. Once the avocados are in the bowl add in your lime juice. Then add in a few drops of green tabasco. I get out a potato masher to mash up the avocados, lime juice, and tabasco.
3. Once creamy, dump in your Pico de Gallo. I make a nice pico if you want that recipe. Also, add in about 1 tsp. of Thyme and 1 tsp. of olive oil.
4. I always add my salt in last to taste. Mix it all up together and the final product is delicious homemade guacamole that will leave you wanting more!
Serve it up with some tortilla chips, pita chips, pretzel thins, or even Nut Thins (my favorite).
